World book night Column- Piyush Jha talks about a new way to celebrate reading and books

While surfing the net on the first days of the new year, I stumbled upon something that I had never heard of before - World Book Night! It turns out that intrepid bibliophiles have been at work expanding the scope for books and reading. Apparently, the event is celebrated for almost 10 years now on the same date as the UNESCO International Day of the Book- 23rd April. Since World Book Day is a well-established reading celebration for children during the day, World Book Night is for grown-ups to celebrate books in different ways at night.
April is still some time away, but I’m just putting the idea out there for people to use and get inspired. For those that need some help in the planning, World Book Night also has a website that you can connect with to figure out ideas that you can use to have your own little celebration. They also have helpful categories and appropriate activities. For instance, as an individual, you could simply hold book swaps with friends and colleagues or if you’re adventurous and outgoing, you could even have a full-fledged book-themed party. Writers and readers could have a small reading with at their favourite cafe or go live on social media using #worldbooknight. Bookstores are encouraged to have Author visits and special offers and discounts on the said night. Waterstones bookstore in Doncaster in the UK quite successfully motivated their regular patrons to buy a book and share it with someone who would not have discovered it otherwise. Libraries could create a special World Book Night list which they can share with their members for their night-time read. Organisational workplaces are urged to present books to employees who otherwise might not be reading or are lapsed readers. There are even suggestions to celebrate World Book Night with care homes, old age homes, orphanages and other NGOs.
It’s commendable, the lengths to which The Reading Agency, the organisation behind World Book Night has gone to make the event a meaningful activity. Currently, the event is celebrated in the UK and the US, but I’m pretty sure that we in India can make a bid to participate, in at least our major cities.
Since, 23rd April also happens to be the probable birth and death date of William Shakespeare, I’m sure he’d approve saying, “A beggars book, outworths a noble’s blood.”

Future classroom: How tech is changing the way we learn

Whoa! It’s almost 20 years since the new millennium, and the generation that was born then is already in universities. This new generation has spent its teenage days surrounded by technology. Let us then have a look at how technology is shaping the education sector, and what the top trends of 2020 are going to be:
1. Impact of 5G smartphones: With the launch of 5G smartphones, teachers and students will soon have a mobile internet connection that is faster than the one they access via their institutes. It can lead to a rise in school infrastructure spending.
2. Artificial intelligence: AI is helping enhance the learning curve of students and teachers. For instance, by coupling it with video analytics, AI can detect responsiveness of a class as well as a student. It can inform a teacher about weak engagement points and support skill building. This progression will continue in 2020.
3. Content experience: Building on the concept of smart classes, will AR and VR step into the picture across schools and colleges? This depends on the scale and forward-looking vision of an institute. If you are a large institute, there are more opportunities to use AR/VR kits; smaller schools may struggle to find economies of scale, and can eye rental solutions.
4. Procurement: Alternative corporate finance mechanisms are in place with schools to drive edtech procurements via subscription contracts that enable flexibility, support and maintenance. Such initiatives can also be evidence-based, and if the technology procured isn’t as supportive as marketed, the school can give it back.
5. Workforce reform: Towards the end of 2020, it is hoped schools will start to enjoy the fruits of their initial challenges, including workforce-related reforms.
6. Edtech and supplier partnerships: The advent of tech players has changed the nature of B2B tech deployments within the industry. Educational institutes are now barely treated as a customer, but more like equal partners. We might see a greater emphasis on this front in 2020.
7. Global solutions: Solutions to economically deliver content to students at scale are being launched in India and the world. Tech is paving the way for the global integration of our education system.
8. Devices: All devices can more or less run any software these days, as everything is shifting to the cloud. So, it comes back to budget, especially considering the number of devices needed across schools and the capabilities they may need to run specific applications such as graphics, video editing. CAD/CAM and 3D printing are becoming cheaper to purchase and run. It will help younger generation to expand its scope of work with on-the-go applications.
9. Connected classrooms: It will help in better resource optimisation as a single teacher will be able to communicate with multiple classrooms at once—help extend first-rate education to everyone without depending on the teacher-to-pupil ratio.
10. Futuristic classroom: We return to the cliché—will we see changes in how classrooms are traditionally set up? We have seen more open-plan environments emerging all over the world. This also holds true for India as we see new schools being designed using unconventional approach. We might start to see specialist classrooms with both teachers and students moving around more freely … or maybe not.

Govt. launches road accident database
Pilot project in six States will be followed by pan-India roll out
The government on Monday launched a central accident database management system that will help in analysing causes of road crashes and in devising safety interventions to reduce such accidents in the country.
The IT tool, known as the Integrated Road Accident Database (IRAD), has been developed by the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) and will be implemented by the National Informatics Centre. The project costs ₹258 crore and is being supported by the World Bank.
Highest fatalities
The system will be first piloted in the six States with highest fatalities from road crashes — Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. The IRAD will be improved on the basis of the learnings from the trial, following which it will be rolled out across the country.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the IRAD at the road safety stakeholders’ meet. Mr. Gadkari said that around 30,000 tablets would be distributed to police personnel across the country to record data on accidents.
How it works
The IRAD mobile application will enable police personnel to enter details about a road accident, along with photos and videos, following which a unique ID will be created for the incident. Subsequently, an engineer from the Public Works Department or the local body will receive an alert on his mobile device. He or she will then visit the accident site, examine it, and feed the required details, such as the road design. Data thus collected will be analysed by a team at IIT-M, which will then suggest if corrective measures in road design need to be taken.
Road users will also be able to upload data on road accidents on a separate mobile application, which is expected to go live from April 1, according to a Ministry official.
Overspeeding
India sees the largest number of road fatalities in the world. More than 1.5 lakh people lost their lives in road crashes in the country in 2018, according to government data. Of the total people killed in road crashes in 2018, 48% were between 18 years and 35 years old, and more than 60% of such fatalities were due to overspeeding.

QR Code can use as a connecting tool for cybercrime.

Bar codes are using in the library since long back, and it was the brainchild of Woodland, which he developed in the year 1950. It becomes cleverer key for the businessman for the smooth functioning of their business.
But in the case of library automation, barcode trending was very high and with good progress with a positive impact on Library Management System (LMS).
Barcode to QR Code
In today's era, we are talking about the smart librarianship, so tools that we are using are brilliant in terms of their use and benefits.
QR code is one of the tools which trending very much in the smart librarianship profile.
QR represents for Quick Response, and it is taken birth in 1994 by the Toyota Motors subsidiary Denso Wave to track vehicles and parts during the manufacturing process.
Why QR Code in Library
As you know, there is a new trend going on in western countries, the concept called BYOD (Bring Your Device), and in India, it's picking up very well.
If students are coming with their device, it means they are coming with their weapon as LIS professionals, and we should be ready to tackle them.
So, it's a challenge for LIS professionals to tackle such situation we need to acquire some quality skills and smart tools to stay fit in the competitive world.
There is some minimum requirement to implement QR Code mechanism in the library they are,
QR Code Generator – it is available on the www domain with most of the required features, and for further advance requirement, we need to burn the cash.
QR Code Scanner – It is inbuilt in the smartphone, which is freely available on all platforms may be an android or iPhone Operating System.
Internet Connectivity – nowadays it termed as a basic need of human being
Where we can deploy the QR Code
It can link from print to e-resources,
E-Contents
Online Surveys
Library Contests
Library Stacks
Journal @ Online Electronic Holdings
Library Audio / Video tour for Orientations
Library Blog, Websites
Digital Library
Library Maps
Library Wi-Fi Network, etc.
QR Code Post-mortem
It is excellent when you implemented QR code, and even users also using the same with interest. Secondly, management is also happy as you had invented something without any investment. But for every coin, it had two sides, so we need to be careful in terms of whether the QR code which you had created may link in the wrong way.
QR Code connecting – Wrong Way
We must be alert as there are a lot of cases reported in the news domain regarding QR Code scams, the scams can be anything, or it may be one of the below-mentioned activity, they are
Direct to Phishing Page
Download Malware
Financial Loss
Virus
Taboo content
Wrong Information
Mislead Information
Malware
What precaution one needs to take to avoid such instance at their institute or organization, I will try to put some critical filters for avoiding such a situation they are
Check & update all QR Code regularly
In case of damage or mislead you should immediately replace and alert the library user
Create awareness among the user about safety measures in terms of using QR Code
Use a scanner app that checks the website the QR code is pointing to before taking you there.
Ask the user to check first to see if the code is on a sticker. A quick finger check will tell you this. If it's a sticker, don't scan.

Opinion: E-books vs. hard copy books
We are living in a world run on technological advancements. This is an age of pursuing easy access and convenience. Technological advancements are affecting every part of our lives, including literature.
Books are now accessible via tablets and computer screens, sparking the debate on e-books v.s. hard copies and the benefits that come with a new digital literary world. Having just finished my first e-book experience, I wonder what benefits come with this new digital world.
I must start by saying I prefer hard copy books over e-books. As an avid reader, the feeling of turning a page and holding an entire story in my hands is something that cannot be replaced by a computer screen. Director of the Laboratory for Visual Learning Dr. Matthew H. Schneps stated in an email to CBS News the choice of reading source is dependent on the individual’s preferences.
“First and foremost, consider the person and their lifelong preferences,” said Schneps. “Some people absolutely love the look, smell and feel of the classical book held in the hand. Such people may not want to give up the sensory experience of reading from a paper book.”
There is an element of convenience with e-books. Finding and purchasing books are possible with a few touches of a button. It only takes a few seconds to have a new story ready to read. Writer Remez Sasson lists the practicality of e-books.
“You can purchase, download and read e-books within minutes all without leaving your chair,” said Sasson. “E-books also don’t take up much space. You don’t need a room or library for them. You can easily store hundreds of books on a single, technological device.”
Having any book you want with easy access is desirable. However, having a hard copy seems to add to the experience of reading. It is something to grasp, something that emphasizes the phrase, “It’s a page-turner.”
The anticipation of being able to turn the page of a book — to find what lies on the other side — is an incomparable feeling. If you have a favorite book, having a physical copy almost feels like an extension of yourself. The characters become your friends. The story becomes part of your world. Having those elements to hold is special.
Those who value an easy, space-saving reading method will find e-books a good fit. While I do not necessarily have anything against e-books, I will take a hard copy to enjoy with a cup of tea any day.
